Maysville CTC English 101 Research Tutorial: 2. Refine

After Clicking on the Search Box: Refine Your Results

A search in Primo will return a list of results, a combination of books, visual, audio, e-books, e-reference books, journal, magazine, and newspaper articles.

Your search may return a significantly large amount of results, so you will need to decide what material type you need.

There are

  • Books used for more in-depth research, print or e-books
  • e-reference books can be used for quick, but authoritative background information.
  • Visual can be DVDs or streaming video.
  • Audio Books on CD.
  • Journal articles for scholarly research that include references, citations, data, methods, etc.
  • Magazine articles for quick, current information but does not include research information.
  • Newspaper articles that have very current news items.

Primo Results List

"How do I decide what material to select?"

Three main search options appear at the left side of the search results. They are:

  • Show Only: groups items by "Peer-Reviewed Journals", "Full Text Online", "Available in the Library". This option narrows search results to scholarly type journal articles, items such as e-books or magazine/journal articles that the full text of the items are available online, and by which library or campus has the print copy of an item.
  • Refine My Results: This option allows you to select by Resource Type, Location, Subject, Author, Date, Database, Journal Title, and other possibilities.
  • Suggested New Searches: This option includes searching by additional authors and related subjects.
