Music Therapy

Music has been said to "soothe the savage beast" from the play The Mourning Bride (1697) by British poet William Congreve. Music can be used as a form of self-care. According to Psychology Today, music therapy specifically is used to improve health in the following ways:

  • Help manage physical pain
  • Improve heart health (heart rate and blood pressure)
  • Support better sleep
  • Improving brain functions, helping with memory and mood

Some ways you can use music for self-care to alleviate stress and promote wellness can include:

  • Simply listen to your favorite music or bands. Different kinds of music can activate certain regions of the brain related to emotional regulation. For example, slower songs generally have a calming effect. This blog provides tips for creating a personalized music therapy routine.
  • Sing out loud or dance to music to suit your mood!
  • Using a sound machine during the day to help your mood or "white," "green," or "brown" noise during the night to support sleep.
  • Using a mobile app such as Frequency: Healing Sounds, Moongate: Binaural Beats, or Brainwaves: Binaural Beats. Wearing headphones is recommended for listening to binaural beats which affect brain waves by playing sounds of different frequencies in each ear.
